What size artwork should you choose? From small formats of 13×18 cm to large formats of 160×160 cm

A Mister Melody artwork is not a picture you buy to fit the size of your wall: it is an assemblage of vintage audio cassettes, and each series has its own format, number of cassettes, and price. Here is how to navigate them, from smallest to largest.

The number of cassettes determines the format

A portrait is built cassette by cassette. The larger the artwork, the more it requires: a 13×18 cm piece uses one or two, Abbey Road uses 336. The format is therefore not a choice of frame: it depends on the subject and what I want to convey.

The formats, series by series

For gifting: the small formats

The Demo, EP, and Mix-Tape fit in your hands before they fit on a wall. They are the gift format: a specific artist, an era, a memory. Find them in the gift ideas, or read my guide to giving a gift to a music fan.

For a living room wall: Single, B-Side, and Timeline

From the Single format, the artwork takes its place on a wall. A piece like “I Pop” (Single, 15 cassettes), “Black Moses” (B-Side, 36 cassettes), or “Calling” (Timeline, 45 cassettes) creates a portrait without overwhelming the room.

For a centerpiece: Analog and Major works

With a hundred cassettes or more, the artwork becomes the focal point of a room. “Comic Strip” (Gainsbourg, 100×70 cm, 97 cassettes), “Lou” (Lou Ottens, 70×100 cm), “Start Me Up” (the Rolling Stones, 121×108 cm), or “Abbey Road” (the Beatles, 160×160 cm) are designed for this. These large formats can also find their place in a hotel, restaurant, office, or business.
